It's hard to believe that summer is almost over and back-to-school is just around the corner. I hope this message finds everyone well rested and ready for another GREAT year of learning.

End of Grade Tests
Scores are back from round one of end of grade tests. Students who receive a level 2 are automatically required to take a re-test. Level 1 students are not required to re-test but are able to take a re-test with parent permission. The highest score achieved is the official score on the end of grade tests.

In the classrooms… Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to experience some of the best experiences Hunter GT Magnet has to offer. Science Night was very well attended and full of great science information from both students and adult presenters. I am so proud of the 4th and 5th grade students who completed a project!

Additionally, I experienced my first North American Market! At the Market, 5th graders make and sell products as a fundraiser for their fieldtrip to Camp Kanata.

After a long and cold winter, it seems like spring has finally arrived! Students are excited to get out in the sun and enjoy our North Carolina climate. While in school it is important for students to keep their focus on learning and teaching. Remind your students that our work is not over. We will have a much deserved break at the end of the month and then we come back for the final run.

PBS Rewards

Last week 3-5 students celebrated their good behavior through a PBS Rewards Day! Students who had earned 25 tickets were able to purchase tickets to participate in kickball, board games, and other fun activities. These reward days not only reward students for demonstrating STAR behavior, but they also build a sense of community through the school. Congratulations to all of our students who earned a reward.

Last week we celebrated the 100th day of school! In the lower grades students brought in 100 items and made estimates of items and completed other activities centered on the number 100. This type of authentic learning encourages students to become more engaged in their learning because there is purpose. Throughout Hunter GT Magnet Elementary students are engaged in authentic learning activities that require students to evaluate information and apply knowledge and skills.

This past week students resumed the elective schedule. Our kindergarten and first grade students are now taking two electives per quarter. First graders can be seen marching through the halls proudly carrying their instrument for Ms. Taylor's Orchestra class. When electives begin our school returns to that buzz that so many of you have mentioned attracted you to Hunter GT Magnet.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing holiday and New Year. As students and staff return from break and get back into the grind, we will all begin the New Year with optimism and hope.

Many students in grades K-5 will take the mid-year dibels assessment. Teachers will compare the mid-year score with the score from the beginning of the year to measure growth. All students will take some type of common assessment to measure academic growth.

The classrooms at Hunter are filled with energy and excitement as we prepare to dismiss for the winter break. It seems like we just began second quarter, but in two weeks, we will complete second quarter electives. That means that when we return from break, students will register for second semester electives. Be on the lookout for more information about elective registration in the coming weeks.
